The Whole Child Matters

The mission statement of Brookville Local Schools "...is to challenge, prepare and support all students to realize their full potential."  The students’ full potential goes beyond report cards and test scores.  A goal of Brookville Local Schools is to satisfy the five tenets of whole child education which is to ensure that children are healthy, safe, engaged, supported, and challenged.  We are in the business of preparing students to meet a rapidly changing world and workforce so that they can become successful, productive citizens of our community.  Brookville students are prepared for the future when they demonstrate skills across academics, enhanced soft skills, and community engagement.  Helping our students develop and display 21st-century skills such as grit, growth mindset, emotional regulation, and having successful interpersonal relationships will be critical for their future success in the workforce.  Research has shown that targeting self-management, responsible decision-making, relationship skills, social awareness, and self-awareness can increase student achievement in reading and math, improve classroom behavior, improve the ability to manage stress and depression, and improve attitudes about themselves, others, and school.
 

Partnerships in the Community 

We recognize that it truly takes a village to support our students.  Throughout the district, we rely on our community partners to assist with meeting the needs of our students that can stretch beyond the walls of our buildings. We also find ways to give back to our community partners to assist with their ability to meet the needs of individuals and families in Brookville.  One way we give back is through our annual food drive.  As a district staff, each year we collect food and staple items to donate to the two local food banks in Brookville--Shepherd’s Hands Food Bank and F.I.S.H. Food Pantry.  Over the past four years, we have collected a total of 8,065 pounds of food.  This year we collected 2,327 pounds of food that will be donated to each food pantry.  
As social needs arise for our students and their families, school staff work with community partners like The Brookville Community Network to find resources to meet those needs.  Our school nurses, Kathy Dafler and Angie Sprada, use their connections to various organizations to help students and families with clothing needs, medical needs, and home needs, to name a few.  Mrs. Dafler coordinates winter outreach activities like our winter hats, coats, and gloves collections and our holiday collection for students and families.  

In a collaboration with Dayton Children’s Hospital, our district welcomed the Student Resiliency Program (SRP). The SRP was designed by Dayton Children’s to provide school-based resiliency care coordination services to children and families with mental health, environmental, physical, recreational, and social needs.  The Student Resiliency Coordinators (SRCs) are able to meet the students and families where they are, help provide support and connection to services to meet basic home environment barriers, as well as work individually and with the family system on the mental health needs of identified students.  Our three SRCs work to build competence, confidence, connection, character, contribution, coping, and control with the students on their caseload.  
Without these connections, our ability to educate our students holistically would be diminished.  We are grateful for our community partnerships as they are an integral part of ensuring our students are healthy, safe, engaged, supported, and challenged.  
 

Foster Care Liaison

Stephanie Hinds

Mrs. Stephanie Hinds serves as the Foster Care Liaison and McKinney Vento Homeless Assistance Act representative for Brookville Local Schools. We believe educational stability is especially critical for students in foster care. Our goal is for these students to feel safe, supported, and connected. We know that a positive educational experience lays the foundation for long-term success both in and beyond the classroom.

Our liaison is knowledgeable, committed, and equipped to advocate for and support our students in foster care. Mrs. Hinds can be reached at hindss@brookvilleschools.org or 937-833-2181.

The Board of Education is committed to providing a safe, positive, productive, and nurturing educational environment for all of its students. The Board encourages the promotion of positive interpersonal relations between members of the school community.

Harassment, intimidation, or bullying toward a student, whether by other students, staff, or third parties is strictly prohibited and will not be tolerated. This prohibition includes aggressive behavior, physical, verbal, and psychological abuse, and violence within a dating relationship. The Board will not tolerate any gestures, comments, threats, or actions which cause or threaten to cause bodily harm or personal degradation. This policy applies to all activities in the District, including activities on school property, on a school bus, or while enroute to or from school, and those occurring off school property if the student or employee is at any school-sponsored, school-approved or school-related activity or function, such as field trips or athletic events where students are under the school's control, in a school vehicle, or where an employee is engaged in school business.

This policy has been developed in consultation with parents, District employees, volunteers, students, and community members as prescribed in R.C. 3313.666 and the State Board of Education's Model Policy.
